1) Will my child be expected to know their multiplication in 2nd grade?

Kim: In 2nd grade students begin to develop multiplication by working with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Students will also be able to determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends. Students will also work with multiplication facts up to 5 by using addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.

2) My child's teacher does not prepare study guides for my child's math test, should I speak to the principal about this?

Kim: As a seasoned educator, I will tell you that the teacher is ALWAYS the first point of contact! Please do not go over a teacher's head and speak to the principal first. You're just asking for tension the remainder of the school year! I would request a conference with the teacher, express your concerns and try to come to a resolution. With that said, preparing a study guide is teacher preference and is not mandatory. Professionally and personally I believe a child beyond 1st grade should have study guides to help organize their learning and testing activities. But you can't force it, you can only request it. If after the conference there is no real resolution, I would simply make copies of your child's work that comes home and keep the assignments and quizzes to help prepare your child at home. Remember most teachers are trying their best to provide a quality learning experience, but the home and out-of-school preparations from you are always the key to assisting your child in achieving goals and objectives.
