Grandparents Day is celebrated in September (September 9 this year) and it is a great time for us to think about the special relationship we and our children might have with our grandparents and the impact that relationship has on our lives. A special bond between kids and their grandparents can have a positive impact that lasts a lifetime.
Grandparents are Special!
Grandparents have that unique way about them that makes us want to sit next to them and soak in all their wise words. Their abundance of knowledge through all their life-long experiences is fascinating. Grandparents may have seen parts of the world that they can describe in detail or maybe they have been to war or lived through hard economic times.
Grandparents are people to look up to because they not only gave birth to our parents but they just “know” so many things. They might have that special story for you everytime you see them, that extra big hug when you are feeling down or overwhelmed, or their home-made cookie recipe when you need it most.
Research has shown that the bond between a grandparent and a grandchild rivals only the emotional bond between a parent and a child. It is very common that the second closest relative to a person are his/her grandparents. The significance of a close relationship with a grandparent is reinforced in this situation.
Spending special time with grandparents and making memories and traditions with them helps lead to an overall happier and more satisfied life.
