June 24 is Upcycling Day which is a day all about celebrating creativity and taking old objects and turning it into something new and unique. Make something new out of something old! This day also helps to raise awareness around the issue that upcycling was designed to fight the growing waste problem our society contributes to.
Upcycling and recycling go hand in hand. To upcycle is in reality to recycle or re-use something you already have and not be wasteful. Instead of buying something new, be creative and use what you have to enhance it and bring it a new purpose! We can take a look around the house and find something old and bring it to life with a crafty idea.
Upcycling Kids Crafts to Try at Home
Empty plastic milk jugs (1/2 gallon). Cut out the bottom portion to hold colored pencils as pictured here (by Craft Factory) or to hold other items such as crayons, erasers, rulers and other school supplies. Label them if you like to even better organize.
Bottle Lid Stamps: Save up a few milk carton lids, felt stickers around the house, ink pad and glue. (Hands on as we grow)
- Milk carton lids (bottle tops)
- Foam shapes/Felt stickers
- Strong glue
- Ink pad
Play around with the internet and search other crafty ideas to upcycle. You may find some neat things to make as gifts as well. Happy upcycing!
