The month of February is famous for many things including Valentines Day, Black History Month, the shortest month of the year, Groundhog Day, Presidents Day, Mardi Gras, National Doggy Date Night and Library Lover Month to name a few!
February comes from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse.” Perhaps in February we can cleanse away the entire year of 2020 and start fresh with new beginnings this year.
Every four years is Leap Day and a new day is added to the calendar on February 29th. 2020 was a leap year so the next one will be 2024. How do we know?
Here are the rules of leap years:
- A year may be a leap year if it is evenly divisible by 4.
- Years that are divisible by 100 (century years such as 1900 or 2000) cannot be leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. (For this reason, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 were.)
The Full Snow Moon
February’s full Moon, the Snow Moon, will reach peak fullness at 2:34 A.M. EST on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Because it typically snows more in February than in any other month, the February moon is called the Snow Moon. Take the kiddos out before bedtime on 2/9 to see the moon almost at its full peak!
Library Lover Month
The Fulton County Public Library and Forsyth Public Library systems put a lot of time and effort into having FREE resources and events for people of all ages throughout the year. February is a great time to learn more about these resources and see what activities you and your family might enjoy even if they are still virtual for now. In a normal year, there are family movies, storytimes, chess groups, yoga, book clubs and more.
Earlier this year, Fulton County Library System launched a variety of new Digital Resources amid COVID-19. Popular library digital resources launched include Lynda.com, Kanopy, and Creative Bug. Paper.co was also launched which is a free, online tutoring service, for Fulton County residents and library card holders. Through Paper’s remote learning platform, students are provided unlimited 24/7 access to online tutoring in any subject from a fully vetted Paper educator, and essay review with annotated feedback within 24 hours.
