July is Picnic Month which gives us so many more ways to Celebrate Summer! What is a picnic and how did it originate? The tradition dates back to hunting expeditions in the Middle Ages (late 1600’s) where hunters would partake in a day of sport and bring a meal to enjoy in the great outdoors (theparkcatalog).
Summertime is family time and for many families means outdoor fun and picnics! Fresh vegetables and warm fresh air are usually in abundance as well in July which gives us more reason to celebrate. So grab a basket, tablecloth and your favorite food to meet up with friends and family!
We have suggestions for ways to have the kids help plan/pack a picnic and even help choose the location! The kids will feel a sense of accomplishment by participating in the details and might even help pack and prep. Kids love to do research especially on their computers – encourage them to investigate fun places to picnic at a park where there are activities everyone will enjoy. Give them guidelines – make sure there are picnic tables, do you need to reserve space? Is there potential shade, places to put down blankets? They can also research menu items to bring and help with the food shopping and prep! Outings can be so much more fun when all are involved with the planning from beginning to end.
We wish you the happiest of summers and the best of luck planning your outdoor picnics and adventures! AlpharettaMOms is a proud writer for North Fulton Family Life Publications. You will find this article in the July issue.
