As another summer draws to a close and there are just a few weeks remaining, what are some of the things you would still like to accomplish with the kids? Consider what you think your family would enjoy, what is realistic and make it happen! While you await another school year to begin, there is time now to capture and cherish those moments of your children growing up. We suggest doing what your family tends to find the most enjoyable whether it is fitting in memory making adventures/short excursions or relaxing at home to wind down the summer.
Georgia offers multiple places to hike and explore. Consider taking a day trip to Amicalola Falls or Toccoa Falls and try Gold Mining in Dahlonega nearby. There are multiple places to tube down the river: Chattahoochee River, Helen, near McCaysville, Elijay, Blue Ridge and more. Float down the river on a nice day, soak in the beautiful views and relax! The North Georgia Mountains offer a scenic getaway for a weekend or day trip. Blue Ridge is under a 2 hour drive and has everything an outdoor, adventurous family craves. Activities include fishing or canoeing/tubing on the Toccoa River, boating, horse-back riding, ziplining, kayaking, drive-in movies, and of course shopping/dining in the quaint downtown area of Blue Ridge. Take a ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway; this historic railroad depot remains the central focus in downtown Blue Ridge. If you are feeling really adventurous, try white water rafting on the Nantahala. About an north of Blue Ridge, past Murphy and just inside North Carolina there are multiple outfitters to take you white water rafting. We have been to Paddle Inn twice and rent duck boats. Families can also go with a guide on a raft. I recommend if you are renting duck boats and you have a young one 10 and under to rent a double and have your child go with you. It is about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour trip down the scenic Nantahala. The end is the only class 3 (to my knowledge) where it gets a little tricky and you need some fast maneuvering! The water is VERY cold – a wet suit is highly recommended!!
At the same time, just hanging at home and relaxing has a huge appeal as the summer winds down. Spending these last few weeks with family whether its playing games, taking walks, reading or even cooking together can give everyone the downtime they need before school activities and studies start again. We hope you are having a nice summer and that you will have an opportunity to enjoy the last few weeks before the daily grind begins again.
