After the holidays and into the spring, kids may lose some of their academic focus. We have a few suggestions to keep your children motivated to stay on track academically so they can end the year on a strong note!
Continuously encourage your child: As a parent, one of the best things we can do to help our children is to be involved, be around and be a big supporter. Being an active parent lets our children know we care about their overall well being and how they do in school. As a child, my father could usually sense when I needed an extra push to stay focused. In high school, he would come to my room where I studied and talk to me about how I felt about my classes, if I needed help and encourage me to stay focused. Every semester at Clemson, my dad would mail me a handwritten note encouraging me to “buckle down” and give it my all. I looked forward to those notes and they really did help reinvigorate me to work harder.
Schedule fun activities on the weekend as time allows: If the kids have a long week and have something fun to look forward to on the weekend, it might help give them that extra energy to apply themselves academically. Suggestions include Ice skating, hiking, Dave & Busters, Main Event, Andretti’s, Bowling, a Movie. Seasonal family fun ideas include visiting a farm or pumpkin patch, apple (fall)/strawberry (spring) picking and more!
Keep their weeknight activities at a manageable level: Help manage their stress so they can stay engaged with their studies. Attempt ( I know it can be hard ;)) to not over schedule them with play dates, sports, errands or other activities so they have enough time to do their homework and study and can get enough sleep to keep their energy up.
Bribery usually works for me: Bribery is not for everyone but it is something that works with our kids. It isnt necessarily financial but we do occasionally ask them to do all their work and study for something in return. If your child has no missed homework for a period of time ~ maybe reward them with ice cream or outing to their favorite restaurant.
